Computing Performance Improvements over Six Decades
Computing performance improvements over the decades had an enormous impact on software development methods and methodologies. From punch card input and printed outputs in the 1960s, to the Internet connected to multiple devices, to autonomous cars and virtual reality, technology capabilities have challenged software developers. This table shows those performance trends in four areas: processing speed, external storage, connectivity, and person–computer interfaces. I am indebted to colleagues Barton Friedland and Freddy Jandeleit for their research in constructing this table, but I take full responsibility for the accuracy.
