FOR FATHER’S DAY in 2022, my youngest daughter gave me a bright red T-shirt with a sun-drenched mountain scene and a slogan that read, “Think Outside: No Box Required.” I’ve never quite liked the cliché “think outside the box,” possibly because I don’t like to think of either myself or others in a box to begin with. I do like the phrase “think outside” because of its double meaning—thinking about your next outdoor adventure or thinking outside your current thinking—it’s both physical and mental.¹
