A virtual private network (VPN) is the extension of a private network that encompasses links across shared or public networks. VPN connections use the connectivity of the Internet and a combination of tunneling and data encryption technologies to connect remote clients and remote offices.

Windows Server 2008 and Windows Vista with Service Pack 1 support the following VPN protocols:

  • Layer Two Tunneling Protocol with Internet Protocol security (L2TP/IPsec)

  • Secure Socket Tunneling Protocol (SSTP)

This chapter describes the details of the PPTP, L2TP/IPsec, and SSTP VPN protocols.
