Summary

Windows Server 2008 and Windows Vista with Service Pack 1 support the PPTP, L2TP/IPsec, and SSTP VPN protocols. PPTP uses a TCP control connection and PPTP control messages to maintain the tunnel and GRE encapsulation for data packets. L2TP uses UDP to encapsulate both L2TP connection control messages to maintain the tunnel and data packets. For L2TP/IPsec, IPsec provides ESP encryption for L2TP connection control messages and L2TP-encapsulated data. SSTP uses HTTP over SSL and an SSTP header for SSTP connection control messages to maintain the tunnel and data packets.
