The ‘first wave’ of women's alternative journalism
In both the United States and the United Kingdom, news media produced by, for and about women have long been crucial mechanisms by which women can define alternative visions of womanhood and cultivate new socio-political landscapes. Alternative news media advocated versions of women's political, social and cultural roles that were quite different from those proposed by or imposed by mainstream media. Such media have enabled women to exchange and share news unlikely to find a home in mainstream media institutions, and to develop journalistic and media skills.
