The copper-nickel alloy cupronickel is used in
American nickels and in Japanese 100-yen
and 50-yen coins. Over 1,000,000 tons of
nickel are produced worldwide every year.
The metal is used in a multitude of alloys,
especially iron alloys like stainless steel but
also shape-memory titanium alloys. Nickel
has gotten a lot of attention lately with the
advent of environmentally friendly nickel-
metal hydride rechargeable cell batteries.
