“I want to hire you,” said the CEO on the Zoom call in August 2019. My jaw dropped to the floor. I had thought this was just an intro call! “Wow, I'll need to think about it. Gosh, I would have worn something more formal if I thought this was the conversation we'd be having!” The CEO laughed.
This was a follow-up call from a follow-up call. After I'd met a friendly human at the VentureBeat conference, he introduced me to his colleague who he thought would be a wonderful person for me to meet. That person referred me to this CEO and this fortuitous Zoom call. I was looking for a job, and she was hiring. A few weeks later, she and her coworker met me for coffee downtown. “Your offer is one of my top three choices,” I said, playing hardball and not committing to their job offer. This apparently inspired laughter later from the CEO who was used to having people grovel for jobs. A few weeks later, we confirmed the job offer details via email. When it came down to my two favorite options, I negotiated with both to get the best contract terms by leveraging the fact that I had competitive offers. I was excited by both and ended up taking the one the CEO verbally gave me on the spot. I increased my base salary from my first tech job to my second tech job by 90% in four months.
