CHAPTER 7Chasing the AI Rocketship: Your Next Steps for a Fleeting Job Market
A common question I get in my DMs: “Joan, how do I get a job in AI?” I totally understand where they are coming from but wonder if they have a goal I don't recommend. This whole book is an answer to how to get a job and build a career. If the question behind the question is “How do I get job stability?” then we've already talked about how AI jobs aren't immune from layoffs. The AI sector doesn't always pay great salaries for all roles. If you're looking to build wealth, there are many options I recommend more (see Part 2 of this book!). Here's a short chapter to address the “Joan, how do I get a job in AI?” question directly.
I entitled this chapter “Chasing the AI Rocketship” since it's a sector with high volatility. If you want a job in AI, I get it. It's prestigious, and it can pay well. Some estimates say AI jobs pay 25% more than non-AI jobs at least.1 Yet, that volatility makes it such a narrow sector that is hard to pin down practical advice. It is probable that by the time this book comes out, this section may already be out of date. It moves fast! My advice is to work on your personal brand, network, polish your storytelling, and get your financial house in order. But, if you really, really want that job in AI, let's talk about it.
Can I promise you'll land a job in AI? Of course not. But I did collect some data about current jobs available. You can check out LinkedIn, Indeed.com, Monster.com ...
