CHAPTER 14You Better Werk: Get Organized, Find Time, and Make Money
Before we talk about jumping into your multimillion-dollar adventure, I'd love to share with you how I've started to create organizations that started small and grew things bigger and bigger. I hope that through these stories you can see opportunities for yourself to start your ventures and grow. You and I might be starting in different places, but I bet there are parts of your journey that might map on to some of mine.
When I went off to college for undergrad, I was a young woman with colorful clothing and a passion for languages. I couldn't wait to meet other people from around the world who spoke different languages—especially French! The University of Washington (UW) boasts a beautiful campus in Seattle with humanities, social science, STEM, and business schools alike. When I arrived, however, there was no French Club. There were running clubs, pre-med clubs, and badminton clubs, but no French. Never fear! I went to an event about how to set up a club and formed the UW French Club.
Founding UW French Club
As the president of the French Club, I hosted events. We met weekly at Suzzallo Café, the beautiful cafe at the Cambridge-esque library at the heart of the campus on Red Square. Created by yours truly, our main slogan was “Come for the Food, Stay for the French.”1 We published our events on Facebook (now Meta), and I created friendly posters that we disseminated around campus.
