Just as different Agile experts will describe Agile differently, different DevOps experts will describe DevOps differently—often very differently. This creates a dilemma in which executives want to issue a directive such as “use DevOps.” Such a directive is entirely unclear.
Worse, such a directive says nothing about what the actual outcome should be. Just as agility should be a goal rather than Agile, DevOps itself should not be a goal. But what is the value proposition of DevOps? That is, what things does it provide? Perhaps those things can be goals.
Also, why do we care? Is DevOps part of Agile? Does it relate to Agile 2?
Yes, and yes, and we will explain why. And DevOps applies to product development in general—not just software development.
Before we start, be prepared that we move fluidly between technical topics and softer topics like leadership. This is because there is no “line” between these things. They are all related! It really is not possible to completely separate the technical and nontechnical aspects of product development today.
