7 Battery Modeling

This chapter describes the modeling and simulation of the external characteristics of the battery. The external characteristics are actually the relationship between current and voltage in the working process of the lithium-ion (Li-ion) power battery, that is, the volt-ampere characteristics of the battery. The battery model is of great significance in the development of the battery management system. On the one hand, a good battery model can provide a basis for the estimation algorithm of the SoC and, on the other hand, a good power battery model can simulate the characteristics and behavior of the battery to help the development of energy management strategies [1].

7.1 Battery Modeling for BMS

7.1.1 Purpose of Battery Modeling

Generally speaking, battery modeling intends to determine the mathematical relationship between the environmental factors and the characteristic quantities of the battery. The objects to be considered include terminal voltage, operating current, SoC, temperature, internal resistance, electromotive force, SoH, etc. It is of great significance for the development of the battery management system to find their relationships.

On the one hand, various performances of the battery in work can be estimated by the established battery model in order to simulate various battery management strategies (such as energy control strategy, battery balance strategy, etc.), and the effectiveness of the strategies can be verified through software. ...
