17 BMS for a Minibus

Compared with light-duty electric vehicles and special vehicles, comprehensive functions are required for the battery management system in the application of new energy vehicles. For example, for the minibus, the battery management system not only monitors and controls relevant features of the cells, but also provides an optimization strategy for the energy output and input of the whole bus. Its main functions include (1) a battery system discharging strategy management, (2) a battery system charging strategy management, (3) a consistent performance evaluation, prediction, and management of the battery system, and (4) battery safety management and protection. These four functions are described in this chapter.

17.1 Internal Resistance Analysis of a Power Battery System and Discharging Strategy Research of Vehicles

The battery management system used in the new energy vehicles must be developed according to the V model, as shown in Figure 17.1.

All items shown in Figure 17.1 are described below:

  1. Definition requirements: According to the design concept of vehicle products, the total output voltage, output power, and functions of the battery system, such as the equilibrium mode, system charging mode, performance evaluation method, safety protection requirements, etc., are determined.
  2. System-level specifications: ...
