In 1961, President John F. Kennedy challenged NASA to land a man on the Moon and return him safely to Earth before the decade's end. This ambitious goal became the Apollo Program. Achieving it required solving complex scientific, engineering and logistical challenges. NASA also had to coordinate over 400,000 people, from engineers and scientists to contractors and administrators, working across multiple facilities.
