A CHARGEN (Character Generation Protocol) attack is another reflected amplification attack. The attack takes advantage of open CHARGEN servers that, running on port 19, will return a random number of characters between 0 and 512 in length every time it receives a datagram from the connecting host. CHARGEN is designed to be used as a source of byte stream for debugging TCP network code and bandwidth measurement. CHARGEN attacks work by abusing CHARGEN servers that have been enabled on network-connected printers.
