Chapter 12

Work and the Workplace Reimagined

While Chapter 11's description of the importance of gamification was a critical chapter in showing how the social mobile cloud transforms interactions between us (inside and outside of our businesses), this chapter on how the workplace has forever changed is the defining chapter for you personally and your role in the social mobile cloud. We are at the beginning stages of entirely rethinking the way people will work, a profound and historic shift in the employer-employee relationship. You must take a lead in thinking this through for your business, processing how this will change you and your employees and adapting like a visionary. You are either 10 steps ahead or you are obsolete.

Nothing short of a revolution is required—we are all operating in a moment in which the organization is turning inside out and fundamentally new models of organizing work are emerging.

Forces of Change

Two forces of change are simultaneously creating this new work environment.

1. First, as opposed to the history of the Industrial Age in which value was created through the standardization of roles in structured hierarchies, today value is being created through dynamic, self-organizing, and specialized roles—with the contributions of individuals to the production process becoming more differentiated.
