Affordances können gefährlich sein. Warst du schon mal bei einem Open-Air-Konzert und hast bemerkt, dass die Stühle fest aneinandergebunden sind? Welche unerwünschten Affordances von Stühlen sollen durch solche Bindungen verhindert werden? Sie machen das Konzert sicherer, indem sie die Stühle aus den Fluchtwegen der Menschen fernhalten und verhindern, dass sie geworfen werden.
Aufgrund unsicherer Codes und Protokolle ist die digitale Welt voller unerwünschter Affordances wie Spam-SMS und -E-Mails, Datenschutzverletzungen, Geldwäsche, Phishing und so weiter. In einigen Fällen waren diese unvermeidbar, in anderen Fällen hätte ein vorausschauenderes Design den Missbrauch verhindern können.
