El andamiaje no es una idea nueva, pero mucha gente (yo incluido) conoció el concepto gracias a Ruby. La idea es sencilla: la mayoría de los proyectos requieren una cierta cantidad del llamado código boilerplate, y ¿quién quiere volver a crear ese código cada vez que se inicia un nuevo proyecto? Una forma sencilla es crear un esqueleto aproximado de un proyecto, y cada vez que necesites un nuevo proyecto, sólo tienes que copiar este esqueleto, o plantilla.
Ruby on Rails llevó este concepto un paso más allá, proporcionando un programa que generaría automáticamente el andamiaje por ti. La ventaja de este enfoque es que podía generar un marco más sofisticado que la simple selección de una colección de plantillas.
