It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.

HTTP es un protocolo sin estado. Eso significa que cuando cargas una página en tu navegador y luego navegas a otra página del mismo sitio web, ni el servidor ni el navegador tienen ninguna forma intrínseca de saber que se trata del mismo navegador visitando el mismo sitio. Otra forma de decir esto es que la forma en que funciona la web es que cada solicitud HTTP contiene toda la información necesaria para que el servidor satisfaga la solicitud.
Pero esto es un problema: si la historia acabara ahí, nunca podríamos conectarnos a nada. Los medios de streaming no funcionarían. Los sitios web no podrían recordar tus preferencias de una página a otra. Así que tiene que haber una forma de construir el estado sobre HTTP, y ahí es donde entran en escena las cookies y las sesiones.
