The preliminary design direction for Designing Web Usability began as a phone conversation between Indianapolis, Indiana and Ashfield, Massachusetts. The first pass of the design was created in Microsoft Word, and snail-mailed to Indianapolis.

The book was then layed out and produced using Microsoft Word, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, and QuarkXPress on a variety of systems, including a Macintosh G3 in Los Angeles, California. With the exception of the initial design pass, all files used for the final design—both text and images—were transferred via email or ftp.
