Our Color Vision is Limited
Abstract
This chapter starts with an overview of visual system neurophysiology, comparing it to how digital cameras work. It then explains strengths and weaknesses of human color vision: we can detect contrasts and edges but not overall brightness levels; color discrimination depends heavily on how it is displayed and the type of display; and people vary in ability to discriminate colors. It explains what color-blindness is and that it does not mean an inability to see colors. The chapter ends with guidelines for design.
