The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standard for rating an electrical enclosure or housing for its protection against the ingress of foreign objects and moisture is the IP rating system. In the United States, the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) has a similar rating system for rating enclosures, called the NEMA rating. Both systems classify enclosures according to how well they protect against the elements and harsh environments.
