Abstract
A broad overview of industrial control electronics is presented in this chapter. Topics include open- and closed-loop control; sensors for temperature, pressure, and other physical characteristics; and actuators such as motors, relays, and solenoids. Thyristors are covered in detail. Several common control circuits are analyzed. The popular industrial computer called the programmable logic controller is covered in depth. The chapter ends with a thorough introduction to data acquisition systems. A thermal control project is included to illustrate the key principles in this chapter.
