Typography on the Screen

Web typography has grown out of the larger field of digital typography that developed with the advent and growth of the digital computer.

Going from print to screen

Originally, digital typefaces were created so that text could be output by computers to a printer, not necessarily displayed on the screen. With the rise of desktop publishing and WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get, pronounced wiz-e-wig) publishing, digital fonts were created that could be displayed on the computer screen as well as printed, but often required separate versions—one for printing and one for screen.

The problem is that type on the screen has a much lower clarity than printed type. Most computers have a working resolution of 72 or 96 dots ...
