In CSS, font style refers to whether a typeface uses an italic or oblique version. These are often used to indicate that text is a citation to another work or simply to add emphasis. In typography, normal text refers to the roman face (also called regular), in contrast to the italic face. Oblique type is referred to as sloped roman.
Italic fonts were originally developed as the more script- or cursive-looking alternatives within a typeface family. They were created as unique glyphs, stylistically similar but distinct from the roman version.
