Day Thirty Six Driving Yourself Crazy
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 33% of the average American family's spending gets lavished on housing, including mortgage or rent, property taxes, utilities, and furniture. Another 16% goes toward transportation, with a big chunk eaten up by our cars, whether it's buying or leasing them, filling them with gas, or paying for insurance.
Add it up, and almost half of our spending is devoted to our homes and our cars. We all need somewhere to live and a way to get around town. But are you spending too much on housing and transportation? Let's take a look at your car or cars.
How much are you spending? Estimate your total annual car costs:
| Car payments | |
| Gas | |
| Insurance | |
| Regular servicing | |
| Registration | |
| Other | |
| TOTAL |
Now, ask yourself: Does your total expenditure on your car or cars seem reasonable relative to your annual income – or are you spending too much?
