A Vision for the Future
This book
In this book we have attempted to describe the most important aspects covered by the term GIS to give the reader a total picture of the subject. Our idea was to produce a book that would be suitable for the reader with little or no knowledge of GIS. Because this is an introductory book, many aspects have been handled relatively superficially and others are mentioned only in passing. A number of subject areas are not discussed at all. For example, there is little discussion of the different mathematical methods and formulas for handling the geometry. However, a number of textbooks are available that describe these parts of GIS theory in greater detail.
Other sources
Those who wish to learn more about the subject should refer to textbooks that give more detailed coverage of GIS. Other opportunities to study GIS are available in the form of an interactive GIS tutorial for self-study and organized courses. Courses at various academic levels are available in many countries, and these are the best means of obtaining a thorough knowledge. A number of GIS publications are available, containing both popular and academic news. The reader should also consult the References section in this book.
