8.1 The Foundation Stones of GIS Software

GIS software is under continuous development, with respect not only to the specific GIS program functions, but also to operating systems and other general program tools. For this reason it is not possible to give a comprehensive description of a GIS software program that is relevant in the long term. In the following section, therefore, we present just a few of the basic relationships. More detailed and up-to-date information can be obtained from suppliers' manuals and brochures.

The GIS application software, the database management systems, and the operating systems represent the foundation stones of GIS (Figure 8.1).

GIS application software may be divided into four main categories:

  1. Functions for registering, entering, and storage of data
  2. Functions for correcting and adapting data for further use
  3. Functions for processing and analyzing data
  4. Functions for data presentation

These four individual GIS application functions are explained in Chapters 13, 14, and 15, and operating systems and database management systems are described in this chapter. In addition, GIS-related software such as the human–machine interface, CAD, WWW, and multimedia are also discussed briefly in this chapter.
