19.8 Data Access and Digital Libraries

Today, the Internet is the most commonly used technology for realizing digital libraries. Several major suppliers of GIS software have developed systems that allow a certain GIS functionality on the Internet. This has made it possible to develop efficient user interfaces. A possible solution for a digital library is shown in Figure 19.16.

Figure 19.16

A digital library for geographical data is being offered to users on the Internet by clearinghouses.

Normally, a digital library covers the following basic functions:

  • User interface for search and selection of data
  • Catalog service/metadatabase

In addition, there will often be automatic functions for ordering and invoicing.

The ultimate goal, from the user's point of view, should be to have access, through the Internet, to original databases distributed on different servers in different institutions all around the country, and ideally all around the world. By a simple selection menu, each user should be able to compose a data profile and have the data transferred automatically to his or her PC. The Open GIS Consortium (OGC) has developed a test version (Web Mapping Test Bed) in the United States which shows this capability for data search.
