Given the earlier exploration of ethics and current technologies and issues, in this chapter we explore the opportunities and challenges of new technologies. First we outline the ethical turbulence surrounding emerging technologies, highlighting the persistent influence of corporate interests, regulatory gaps and conceptual confusion. We then explore related ethical concerns – including hype, privacy, security, autonomy, societal impact, responsibility and uncertainty of outcomes – into practical guidance for technology practitioners.
