It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.
Application – matching images with BRIEF, SIFT, and ORB
In the last section, we discussed how to detect SIFT keypoints. In this section, we will introduce a couple more feature descriptors for an image, namely BRIEF (a short binary descriptor) and ORB (an efficient alternative to SIFT). All of these descriptors can also be used for image matching and object detection, as we will see shortly.
