The MountainCar problem has a small vehicle on a one-dimensional path in a valley between two mountains, and its task is to get to the yellow flag at the top of the mountain on the right. MountainCar was first described by Andrew Moore in 1990:

The car's engine is not powerful enough to get it over the mountain peak, so the car has to move back and forth and learn to use momentum to reach the flag. There is a MountainCarContinuous version of the problem that gives a higher reward for spending less energy solving the problem.
