Motivation is at the very heart of performance management—something that managers must attend to all the time. A person can understand the importance of ambitious goals but is unlikely to achieve them without being motivated to do so. Feedback or coaching efforts, no matter how extraordinary, will go unheeded by an employee who’s disinterested. Hours invested on someone’s annual performance appraisal and discussion will be largely wasted if the employee doesn’t feel the need to improve.
By contrast, for those who are motivated, every aspect of performance management can serve as an opportunity to learn and grow. How can you inspire engagement and boost motivation on your team?
