Dealing with setbacks

Failure and the need to cope with it

In whatever field we pursue success we are at some point going to confront failure. This can take many forms: being passed over for promotion at work, not being picked for a sports team, a start-up business that hits a cash crisis or a failed driving test.

This is where we most need resilience, the quality that allows us to bounce back and carry on towards our goals. Without resilience, our confidence can be shattered and this lack of confidence can cause us to avoid exposing ourselves to such situations again. As we shall see, this is a natural human response and part of our wiring. Reassuringly, there are tools that can help us bounce back.
