Chapter 51Finding Out Too Much
My job sometimes puts me in awkward positions, like the time I was climbing down an elevator shaft or when I was running away from security staff and happened upon a porn shoot after I jumped a garden fence. There was the time I kidnapped someone (as described in Chapter 11) and had to explain to them what I was doing. And the time I ended up huddled under a table, waiting for staff to leave, and they didn't leave for an hour. I've spent significant time in ditches, in bushes, up trees, and on roofs in the rain and snow. Once I hid under a car in a parking garage, and I've hidden in closets and squeezed awkwardly into turnstiles with people (see Chapter 66). But nothing prepared me for what happened the day I found out way too much.
I had been tasked with getting into a large, well-known commercial company. The building was situated on a grand British country estate. Lush greenery surrounded the amazing structure, which had been taken over by the company decades before. The golden cream brickwork dated back centuries. The long driveway ended in a circular area for dropping off—I assumed it fitted the dimensions required for horse-drawn carriages to turn back when the building was built. To the right was a smaller gravel drive leading to the side of the building where cars could park. Several expensive cars sat in the parking area, each parking spot had a white hand-painted sign indicating who was allowed to park there.
