It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.

I’ll never forget Tom. I was interviewing for an assistant director of the department. He called my secretary to say he’d be 15 minutes late for the two o’clock interview. I was OK with that. He had the good sense to call. When two-fifteen o’clock rolled around, Tom was nowhere to be seen. At two-thirty, he was still among the absent. Now, I have a reputation for being chronically early. I can’t stand to be late. My wife, God bless her, is the same way. Anyway, while I waited for Tom, I talked to myself. “Be calm, Ed. Give him a chance to explain himself.
