Chapter 32. Investigating Seed Plants

Equipment and Materials

You’ll need the following items to complete this lab session. (The standard kit for this book, available from www.thehomescientist.com, includes the items listed in the first group.) Plant the carrot seeds a couple of weeks before you intend to do the rest of this lab session to allow the seedlings to sprout.

  • Goggles

  • Coverslips

  • Forceps

  • Magnifier

  • Pipettes

  • Scalpel

  • Seeds, carrot

  • Slides, flat

  • Stain: eosin Y

  • Stain: methylene blue

  • Teasing needles

  • Gloves

  • Alcohol (ethanol or isopropanol)

  • Carrot

  • Flowers (see text)

  • Foam cups

  • Fruits (see text)

  • Knife, paring

  • Leaves, monocot & dicot (fresh or dried)

  • Leaves, hydrophyte (aquatic plant)

  • Microscope

  • Microscope, stereo (optional)
