2.1 LiDAR RANGING PRINCIPLE

Ranging is a very important application of LiDAR systems. There are two main LiDAR ranging modes: pulse-based ranging and phase-based ranging. The ranging principles of the two modes are described in the following sections.

2.1.1 RANGING PRINCIPLE OF PULSED LiDAR

At present, most LiDAR systems work in the pulsed-based ranging mode. That is, the laser emits a very narrow pulse (the pulse width is usually less than 50 ns) toward the target, and then part of the pulse is reflected by the target and returns to the receiver.
