15 Flux-Modulation Linear PM Motors and Magnetic Screws
15.1 Principles and a Few Typical Configurations
The flux-modulation principle applied on large scale in rotary electric machines [1] refers essentially to three elements:
- An exciter, in general, with 2p alternate poles produced in general with PMs; in general the exciter is the mover.
- A flux modulator which contains a variable reluctance core (on primary or on secondary) with pFM periods of fundamental saliency.
- A primary a.c. winding mmf which produces a pp pole pair traveling wavefield.
- At least one of the three parts is moving.
To produce an average nonzero thrust per period the condition is [1]:
