BUILD YOUR TRUSTED NETWORK
All managers need a network of influence that spreads beyond their formal area of control. Management used to be about making things happen through people you controlled: now it is about making things happen through people you do not control at all or partially control, as well as through people you do control. Management has become harder.
At the heart of influence is trust: we will work with people we trust much more readily than people we do not trust. We will do favours for people we trust in the knowledge that such favours are likely to be reciprocated in the future.
