It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.

Metal-casting Processes and Equipment
Several methods are available to shape metals into products. One of the oldest processes is casting, which basically involves pouring molten metal into a mold cavity; upon solidification, the metal takes the shape of the cavity. Two examples of cast parts are shown in Fig. II.1.
Casting was first used around 4000 B.C. to make ornaments, arrowheads, and various other simple objects. The process is now capable of producing intricate shapes, in one piece, and including those with internal cavities, such as engine blocks.
