Recent realization of limitations around interoperability of blockchains has resulted in the development of systems that can work across multiple blockchains. A recent example is Qtum, which is a blockchain that is compatible with both Ethereum and Bitcoin blockchains. It makes use of Bitcoin's UTXO mechanism for transfer of value and an EVM for smart contracts. This means that Ethereum projects can be ported onto Qtum without requiring any change.
