In order for your newly created RDS environment to continue to function longer than 120 days, you'll need to set up and configure an RD Licensing server. Although it is possible to install the RD Licensing server on the same server as an RD Session Host, in any production environment it is a best practice for it to be installed on a separate server. This gives the RDS farm more flexibility, especially when adding or deprecating RD Session Host servers within the farm. If you already have a Microsoft Windows Terminal Services Licensing server running in support of existing Windows Server 2008 Terminal Services, you can leverage that server for your Windows Server 2008 R2 RDS environment.
