Installing Python from a compressed tarball

If none of the preceding methods works for you, you can also download a compressed tarball (XZ or Gzip) and get it installed. Here is a brief synopsis of the steps:

    #Install dependencies
    sudo apt-get install build-essential
    sudo apt-get install libreadline-gplv2-dev libncursesw5-dev libssl-dev libsqlite3-dev tk-dev libgdbm-dev libc6-dev libbz2-dev
    #Download the tarball
    mkdir /tmp/downloads
    cd /tmp/downloads
    wget http://python.org/ftp/python/2.7.5/Python-2.7.5.tgz
    tar xvfz Python-2.7.5.tgz
    cd Python-2.7.5
    # Configure, build and install
    ./configure --prefix=/opt/python2.7 --enable-shared
    make
    make test
    sudo make install
    echo "/opt/python2.7/lib" >> /etc/ld.so.conf.d/opt-python2.7.conf
    ldconfig
