A statistical hypothesis test is a method that we use to make a decision. We do this using data from a statistical study or experiment. In statistics, a result is termed statistically significant if it is unlikely to have occurred only by chance based on a predetermined threshold probability or significance level. There are two classes of statistical tests: 1-tailed and 2-tailed tests.
In a 2-tailed test, we allot half of our alpha to testing the statistical significance in one direction and the other half to testing the statistical significance in the other direction.
In a 1-tailed test, the test is performed in one direction only.
