In the three-tier architecture, the Core Layer is the center of the network. The core interconnects all distribution layers and sometimes it is referred as the backbone.
At this layer you can usually find the most powerful and advanced switches. Compared to the Access and sometimes the Distribution layer, such switches have multiple redundant components and sometimes even modular form factor. All advanced L3 functions, such as BGB routing, are provided by the Core layer.
