The idea of the RAID level is to use multiple physical devices that form a logical volume. There are two main reasons for working with logical volumes instead of single devices:
- Redundancy: The goal is to have multiple devices (HDDs or SSDs) in a single logical volume. Based on the RAID level, we can tolerate one or more failures without affecting the availability of the logical volume.
- Performance: Some RAID levels have better performance characteristics than other types, but usually the trade-off is capacity. Higher performance means less capacity and vice versa.
