Active Directory Federation Services (AD FS) was first introduced after Windows Server 2003 R2 as an additional download. Officially, that was AD FS 1.0. It was quite limited in features, and few organizations deployed it. However, it was the start of Microsoft offering a standards-based federation and claims-based identity service. Today, AD FS is widely deployed and very commonly used in large enterprise environments as well as for federation with Microsoft Azure and Office 365.

As with some of the other big topics in this book, we could write an entire book about AD FS. However, in this chapter we are going to focus on the most relevant aspects of designing and deploying an AD FS environment. ...
