Special types of microphone
Multi-pattern microphones Some capacitor units have two
diaphragms, one either side of the plate, facing to the front and
rear respectively. The basic pattern of each is a cardioid.
Polarising voltage to the rear can be switched off, leaving the
front to serve as a cardioid; or it can be switched on thereby
giving a combined omni pattern; its polarity can be reversed, so
forming positive front and negative rear lobes with cancellation
at the sides, i.e. a figure-eight pattern; or the reverse voltage
can be reduced, giving a small rear lobe and some side
cancellation, thus producing a hypercardioid response.
