Spot size Light source for disc scanning is a laser because it
generates a coherent beam of a single light wavelength that can
be focused down to the
1
μπι spot size required. Any other
source contains multiple wavelengths that separate when
passed through a lens to produce chromatic aberration, which
is the appearance of various coloured outlines around the
focused image. Achromatic lenses that avoid this are made of
two elements of different types of glass, one cancels the
dispersion of the other, but to make such a lens with the ability
to focus to such a fine spot would be very costly.
