SOME OF THE LIVELIEST and at the same time most thoughtful individuals I met were editors at other newspapers. As executive editor of the Journal and later as publisher, when I retained the title editorial director, there were several ways I came in contact with other editors, many of whom became good friends.

One way was through my participation in the work of the American Society of Newspaper Editors; I served on several of its committees, chaired its Journalism Education Committee, was elected to its board, and then served as the ASNE’s president in 1975 and 1976.
